Makers Mill and the Governor Wentworth Arts Council (GWAC), two local organizations with a shared mission of fostering creativity, are collaborating on the Upcycled Fashion Show: an event that is designed to celebrate ingenuity, community spirit, and environmental awareness. The date of the show correlates with Earth Day celebrations around the world!
Upcycling takes worn or used materials and transforms the old into something new, and typically, more valuable. The Upcycled Fashion Show encourages participants to create upcycled fashion designs crafted from recycled or repurposed materials, either in teams or individually. Each design must incorporate upcycled elements.

Participation in the Upcycled Fashion Show is free and open to everyone. GWAC and Makers Mill encourage kids, teens, adults, family groups, friend groups, and everyone to else to participate! Registration closes April 20, 2024.
To get you in the upcycling spirit, the Makers Mill is hosting several workshops in the weeks leading up to the show that focus on repurposing materials.
This is a free event open to all who are interested in upcycled fashion, but especially helpful for those who are considering entering a design in the Upcycled Fashion Show.

Bring your unwanted/ unneeded clothing and fabric items for free-wheeling trade. Doesn’t fit? Not your style any longer? Curtains, sheets, bedspreads from before you re-decorated? These could be the foundation materials for an upcycling project. Let’s swap materials and exchange ideas!
Join the Makers Mill instructor team who will coach and help you to design and create a wearable upcycled fashion design. All skill levels welcome.
If needed, instructors will teach basic sewing skills on the sewing machine and provide a basic hand-sewing tool kit. Techniques for deconstructing a garment, harvesting the fabric, reusing structural details, working with patterns, and learning adaptive techniques for upcycling will be covered. Bring your own materials (upcycled clothing or upcycled fabric items) and your ideas.
Getting a garment on, closing it up, and then getting it off again can be a surprisingly challenging feat, so let us help you with this skillset! From traditional zippers to basic buttons and lacing techniques, we'll help you find and learn the way that best suits your garment and abilities. Both hand and machine techniques will be practiced.
With only 3 weeks until the Upcycled Fashion Show on April 27th, this workshop provides the time, space, tools and mentors to complete your design project. Instructors are here to help with any fit or constructions challenges.
BONUS Instruction: Deb Ryan from our Metalsmithing & Jewelry Shop will introduce the wrapping, tying, and lacing techniques that will repurpose the spare parts and bits and pieces you've been hoarding into contemporary upcycled jewelry to accessorize and put that final, unique touch to your design.
